Could

हम 'Could' का प्रयोग पूर्व में हुई एक एकल घटनाओं को refer अनुभूति वर्ब्स (गंध, स्वाद, देखें, सुनें, स्पर्श इत्यादि) के साथ करते हैं।

We use 'could' to refer to single events that happened in the past, with verbs of the senses (smell, taste, see, hear, touch, etc.).

Look at the examples:

सूनामी के किनारे पर पहुंचने से पहले ही हम एक बड़ी लहर का आना सुन सकते थे।	We could hear the large wave coming just before the tsunami hit the shore.
हम में से किसी को भी सब्जी जलने की गंध नहीं आई और इससे हम निराश हुए।	None of us could smell the vegetable gravy burning, and we were disappointed.
वह अपने पकवान का स्वाद नहीं चख सकी और उसमे अधिक जायके की ज़रूरत थी, अन्यथा वह जीत सकती थी।	She couldn't taste her dish, and it needed more flavours, else she could have won.

हम 'Could' का प्रयोग 'can' के पास्ट टेन्स के रूप में ज़ोर देकर कुछ कहने के लिए या गुस्से से इशारा करने के लिए कर सकते हैं या वह कहने के लिए जब मतलब हो कि किसी के पास कुछ करने की क्षमता थी या कुछ संभव था।

We use 'could' to as past tenses of 'can' to say something by emphasising or pointing out in anger or to say when it means someone had the ability to do something or something was possible.

Look at the examples:

उसने कहा की वह नही जा सकता था।	He said that he could not go.
उसने कहा की वह सब जगह गाना गा सकती थी।	She told that she could sing everywhere.
आप उसके साथ समझौता करने की कोशिश कर सकते थे।	You could try to compromise with him.
आप खुश दिखने की कोशिश कर सकते थे।	You could try to look happy.
आप मुझे एक छोटा सा एहसान कर सकते थे।	You could do me a small favour.
काव्या नर्सरी की कविताएं सुना सकती थी।	Kavya could recite nursery rhymes.
काव्या नर्सरी की कविताएं सुना सकती है।	Kavya can recite nursery rhymes.
